Every acoustic instrument needs to be tuned when played in an ensemble or in public. Most instruments are usually tuned by its performer or the owner. But pianists need piano tuning expert due to its complicate mechanism.
Why piano technitian?
Most pianos consists 88 keys. Each key has about 50 parts of piano action and from one up to three strings to produce a note. Total number of piano parts are over 5000 and this makes piano maintenance difficult for performers. Thus, there is a piano technical expert who tune the piano, regulate the touch of the keyboards, and regulate the tone of each note. Piano technitians are trained for a couple of years at manufacturer's training institution, schools, or repair factories.
When piano needs tuning?
Althou piano is a tough instrument which lasts over decades, it needs to be tuned on a regular basis. It is recommended for a piano to have it tuned once a year. One reason is the strings' tension is near by 100kg each and that makes all of them eventually stretches. Another advantage is to clean inside of the piano so no bugs or rats makes a nest.
